Dwight caught up just in time to see what he was looking at. Gretta got there first, turning the lock as she squinted out the windows. “He was sitting on the porch, looking adorable.” “Yes, that.” He took a steadying breath and waved at the front door. “The Vargur!” they said in unison, horror widening their eyes. “The crazy monster that disguised itself as a cute little puppy?” the Vargle! The Varga?” There was no recognition on their faces. He looked between her and Baldric with wild eyes. “NO.” Dwight held tight to Gretta’s shoulders and moved so he was between her and the door. “A peanut screamed?” Baldric’s brow furrowed. “No!” Dwight abandoned the wardrobe and grabbed Gretta’s arm. Let her in.” Gretta walked toward the door. “There’s no-” Dwight heaved on the wardrobe again. “Surely if there’s a young girl in peril, we should not leave her outside.” Baldric gestured at the door. “What is it, Sir Dwight?” Gretta held her sword out. It was slow going.īoth Baldric and Gretta came running, swords drawn. Then, he got to work on the nearby wardrobe, maneuvering it inch by inch toward the door. He slammed the door, locked the dead bolt, and heaved the long piece of wood that worked as a medieval lock over the doorway for good measure. Out of Dwight’s mouth, however, came a shrill, girlish scream that could be heard two blocks away. He wore a flowery apron and cradled a large mixing bowl in the crook of his arm, stirring with the other hand. “Heading out, Sir Dwight?” Baldric poked a head out of the kitchen. Maybe he should visit the Contrarian to find out what was going on with his memories. Gretta shifted, but didn’t open her eyes, even as he got up and walked toward the door. The papers rustled as Dwight leaned forward and placed them in his chemistry folder, which slid neatly into his nearby backpack. He got the feeling he wasn’t going to be any less distracted in the future. His eyes darted to her lips, then back down to his chemistry notes. Her breaths had come gentle and slow, like they were now. Her eyes were closed as she rested her head on the back of the couch, her brown hair in a braid down her shoulder.ĭwight had a sudden flashback to that day in the secret room, where he had found her, asleep, on the stone box. She sat on the couch next to him, just a few inches away, using the coffee table (and as a result, her text book) as a footrest. In fact, he was beginning to realize that his pre-scrying-pool memory was full of holes. He couldn’t remember taking a lot of tests. Dwight couldn’t even remember taking this test already. There was a test tomorrow, and he was determined to get better grades this time. He rubbed his eyes, trying to refocus on studying. It was probably too tall for the HOA limitations, but since the HOA president hadn’t said anything about the moat or tower, he figured they were pretty safe. The moat was again full of koi fish (he hadn’t had the heart to tell them the truth about that one.) They had even built a pointed fence around the back and sides of the house. He was pretty sure the watch tower was taller now. That isn’t to say that they hadn’t made fortifications.

Ever since the scrying pool incident, Baldric and Gretta actually used their blender to make smoothies, they used their light switches more often, and they didn’t even board up their windows. Things were slightly different though, this time around. It wasn’t his house, but he had visited so often that he was sure he spent more time there than next door, with his Nana. Dwight sat on the sofa, pen wiggling in his fingers as he stared at his chemistry notes.
